PDF Export Quality & Branding Improvements

Overview

Enhanced PDF export quality with proper logo rendering, Unicode symbol support, and GHCP Partners brand configuration. Fixed critical rendering issues that caused logo distortion and citation symbols to display incorrectly in WeasyPrint-generated PDFs.

New Features

GHCP Partners Brand Configuration

  • NEW: Brand configuration for GHC Partners (templates/brand-configs/brand-ghcp-config.yaml)

  • Colors: Teal green branding (#06382e primary, #0a6654 secondary)

  • Fonts: Work Sans (body) + Poppins (headers) via Google Fonts

  • Logos: Light/dark mode trademark support (webp format)

  • Purpose: Professional LP-facing investment memos with firm branding

Configuration:

YAML
company:
  name: "ghc partners"
  tagline: "Growth Equity. Resilient Capital."

colors:
  primary: "#06382e"
  secondary: "#0a6654"
  background_alt: "#4e5b59"

fonts:
  family: "Work Sans"
  header_family: "Poppins"
  google_fonts_url: "https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Poppins:..."

logo:
  light_mode: "templates/trademarks/trademark__GHC-Partners--Light-Mode.webp"
  dark_mode: "templates/trademarks/trademark__GHC-Partners--Dark-Mode.webp"

Usage:

BASH
python export-branded.py output/Company/4-final-draft.md --brand ghcp

Bug Fixes

1. Logo Aspect Ratio Preservation

Problem: Logos stretched/distorted in PDF exports when firm logo had different aspect ratio than configured dimensions.

Root Cause: CSS set both width and height explicitly, forcing image distortion:

CSS
/* Before (WRONG) */
img style="width: 200px; height: 50px;"

Solution: Use max-width with height: auto to preserve aspect ratio:

CSS
/* After (CORRECT) */
img style="max-width: 200px; height: auto;"

Files Modified:

  • cli/export_branded.py:296 - Remote URL logo rendering

  • cli/export_branded.py:306 - Local file logo rendering

  • cli/export_branded.py:309 - SVG logo embedding

Code Changes:

PYTHON
# Before
logo_html = f'<img src="{logo_path_str}" style="width: {brand.logo.width}; height: {brand.logo.height};" />'

# After
logo_html = f'<img src="{logo_path_str}" style="max-width: {brand.logo.width}; height: auto;" />'

Impact: All exported PDFs now show logos with correct proportions regardless of configured dimensions.

2. Citation Back-Reference Symbol (U+21A9)

Problem: Citation back-references displayed as "?" in PDFs instead of proper leftward arrow (↩).

Previous Workaround: Used ASCII caret "^" which rendered but looked unprofessional.

Proper Solution: Implemented U+21A9 (LEFTWARDS ARROW WITH HOOK) using CSS pseudo-elements with system font fallback.

Technical Approach:

  1. CSS pseudo-element (templates/base-style.css:482-493):

    CSS
    .footnote-back {
        font-size: 0;  /* Hide any content in <a> tag */
    }
    .footnote-back::after {
        content: "\21A9";  /* U+21A9 LEFTWARDS ARROW WITH HOOK ↩ */
        font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;
        font-size: 0.85rem;
        vertical-align: baseline;
        color: var(--brand-secondary);
        padding-left: 0.15em;
    }
  2. Empty anchor tags (cli/utils/fix_citations.py:153-157):

    PYTHON
    # Before (double arrows)
    f'<a href="#{fnref_id}" class="footnote-back" role="doc-backlink">↩︎</a>'

    # After (arrow added via CSS)
    f'<a href="#{fnref_id}" class="footnote-back" role="doc-backlink"></a>'
  3. Removed redundant CSS injection (cli/export_branded.py:243-255):

    • Deleted duplicate arrow CSS that was being injected during export

    • Base template now handles arrow rendering

Why This Works:

  • CSS ::after inserts content after rendering (WeasyPrint supports this)

  • System fonts (-apple-system, etc.) include U+21A9 character

  • Empty <a> tag prevents double-arrow rendering

  • font-size: 0 on parent hides any fallback text

Visual Result:

Before: Citation link [^1?] or [^1^]
After:  Citation link [^1↩]

Dark Mode Compatibility: Arrow color uses var(--brand-secondary) for automatic theme adaptation.

Dependency Fixes

PyMuPDF Installation

Problem: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'fitz' when running deck analyst agent.

Root Cause: pyproject.toml specified pypdf instead of PyMuPDF (which provides the fitz module).

Solution:

TOML
# Before
"pypdf>=4.0.0",

# After
"PyMuPDF>=1.24.0", # For PDF deck analysis (imported as fitz)

Installation:

BASH
uv pip install PyMuPDF

Why PyMuPDF?

  • Better text extraction quality

  • Handles complex PDF layouts

  • Industry standard for PDF processing in Python

  • Required for deck analyst agent's pitch deck parsing

Company Data Files

New Company Configurations

Added structured data files for three companies:

  1. Terrantic (data/Terrantic.json)

    • Type: Direct investment

    • Mode: Justify (retrospective)

    • Stage: Growth

    • Includes trademark URLs for logo insertion

  2. Fernstone (data/Fernstone.json)

    • Type: Direct investment

    • Mode: Consider (prospective)

    • Stage: Series A

  3. CyberNut (data/CyberNut.json)

    • Type: Direct investment

    • Mode: Consider (prospective)

    • Stage: Seed

Standard Schema:

JSON
{
  "name": "Company Name",
  "description": "Brief description for research context",
  "url": "https://company.com",
  "stage": "Series A",
  "type": "direct",
  "mode": "justify",
  "trademark_light": "https://company.com/logo-light.svg",
  "trademark_dark": "https://company.com/logo-dark.svg",
  "notes": "Specific research focus areas"
}

Testing & Validation

Terrantic Export Test Case

Scenario: Full memo generation with GHCP branding and PDF export

Results:

  • HTML Export: 6.6MB with embedded fonts and logos

  • PDF Export: 197KB compressed (97% size reduction)

  • Citations: 58 unique consolidated citations with proper ↩ symbols

  • Logo: Correct aspect ratio (not stretched)

  • Quality Score: 6.5/10 (below threshold, flagged for review)

Commands Used:

BASH
# Generate memo
python -m src.main "Terrantic" --resume

# Export to HTML + PDF
python export-branded.py output/Terrantic-v0.0.1/4-final-draft.md --brand ghcp
bash cli/html-to-pdf.sh exports/branded/Terrantic-v0.0.1.html

Verification:

BASH
ls -lh exports/branded/Terrantic-v0.0.1.pdf
# Output: 197K Nov 24 00:25 Terrantic-v0.0.1.pdf

Technical Implementation

WeasyPrint Font Handling

Challenge: Custom brand fonts (Arboria, Work Sans, Poppins) must be embedded for PDF rendering.

Solution: Google Fonts integration with local fallback chain:

CSS
@import url('https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Work+Sans:...');

body {
  font-family: 'Work Sans', -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', sans-serif;
}

Why This Works:

  • WeasyPrint downloads and embeds Google Fonts during PDF generation

  • Fallback chain ensures rendering even if download fails

  • Fonts cached for repeated exports

Unicode Character Rendering Strategy

Principles for PDF-safe Unicode:

  1. Use CSS pseudo-elements (not direct HTML content)

    • WeasyPrint processes CSS content: reliably

    • Prevents font substitution issues

  2. Specify system font stacks

    • System fonts guaranteed to have common Unicode ranges

    • -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont include arrow characters

  3. Test with WeasyPrint specifically

    • Browser rendering ≠ PDF rendering

    • Always verify in generated PDF

  4. Avoid custom fonts for symbols

    • Brand fonts (Arboria, Poppins) may lack Unicode symbols

    • Use system fonts for arrows, mathematical symbols, etc.

Other Unicode Characters to Handle Similarly:

  • U+2022 (•) Bullet point

  • U+2014 (—) Em dash

  • U+2192 (→) Rightward arrow

  • U+2713 (✓) Check mark

Brand Configuration Architecture

Multi-Brand Support

The system now supports multiple VC firm brands with isolated configurations:

Directory Structure:

templates/brand-configs/
├── brand-hypernova-config.yaml    # Original Hypernova branding
├── brand-ghcp-config.yaml         # GHCP branding
├── brand-avalanche-config.yaml    # Avalanche branding
└── brand-config.example.yaml      # Template for new firms

Export Command Pattern:

BASH
python export-branded.py memo.md --brand {firm-name}

Configuration Isolation:

  • Each brand has independent colors, fonts, logos

  • No cross-contamination between firm styles

  • Easy to add new firms (copy example, customize)

Mode Support:

BASH
# Light mode (default)
python export-branded.py memo.md --brand ghcp

# Dark mode
python export-branded.py memo.md --brand ghcp --mode dark

Breaking Changes

None. All changes backward compatible:

  • Existing brand configs continue to work

  • Logo rendering improved (not changed behavior-wise)

  • Citation arrows enhanced (no markup changes required)

Migration Notes

For Existing Exports

Re-export recommended for memos with:

  1. Logos with non-standard aspect ratios

  2. Citation back-references showing "?" or "^"

  3. Custom brand fonts

Re-export command:

BASH
# Re-export with fixes
python export-branded.py output/Company-v0.0.X/4-final-draft.md --brand {firm}
bash cli/html-to-pdf.sh exports/branded/Company-v0.0.X.html

What Gets Fixed:

  • ✅ Logo proportions corrected

  • ✅ Citation arrows show proper ↩ symbol

  • ✅ Fonts embedded properly

  • ✅ Dark mode compatibility ensured

Performance Impact

Export Times

HTML Generation:

  • Time: ~2-5 seconds (Pandoc conversion)

  • Size: 5-8MB (embedded fonts + logos)

PDF Generation:

  • Time: ~8-12 seconds (WeasyPrint rendering)

  • Size: 150-250KB (compressed)

Font Loading:

  • First export: Downloads Google Fonts (~2 seconds)

  • Subsequent exports: Uses cached fonts (~0 seconds)

Bottlenecks Identified:

  • WeasyPrint PDF rendering (most time-consuming)

  • Large embedded SVG logos (increase file size)

Optimization Opportunities:

  • Pre-download fonts to local cache

  • Compress SVG logos before embedding

  • Use WebP for raster logos (already implemented for GHCP)

Brand Configuration

  • templates/brand-configs/README.md - Brand system architecture

  • templates/brand-configs/brand-config.example.yaml - Template for new firms

Export Tools

  • cli/export_branded.py - HTML export with branding

  • cli/html-to-pdf.sh - WeasyPrint PDF conversion

  • cli/utils/fix_citations.py - Citation consolidation

Styling

    • Solution: U+21A9 via CSS ::after with system font stack

  • Issue: PyMuPDF import failing for deck analysis

    • Solution: Updated pyproject.toml dependency from pypdf to PyMuPDF

  • Issue: Need GHCP-branded exports for LP presentations

    • Solution: Created brand-ghcp-config.yaml with firm colors/fonts/logos

Remaining Issues

  • TODO: Optimize WeasyPrint rendering time (~10 seconds per PDF)

  • TODO: Add automated visual regression testing for PDF exports

  • TODO: Document Unicode symbol rendering best practices
