Milestone: Complete Enrichment System + Deck Analyst Agent Implementation

Four enrichment agents now run after the draft is finished — links, visualizations, socials, citations — turning plain prose into a memo with 19 organization hyperlinks and footnotes that actually resolve in Obsidian.

Changelog - 2025-11-17 Session 1

Milestone: Complete Enrichment System + Deck Analyst Agent Implementation

Date: November 17, 2025 Session: 1 Status: ✅ Complete - Full enrichment pipeline + Deck Analysis working!

Summary

Successfully implemented a complete enrichment pipeline with four specialized agents (Links, Visualizations, Socials, Citations), added command-line arguments for investment type and memo mode, fixed critical formatting issues for Obsidian compatibility, and completed the full Deck Analyst Agent implementation for PDF pitch deck analysis.

Major Accomplishments

  1. Command-Line Arguments (COMPLETE)

    • Added --type {direct,fund} for investment type selection

    • Added --mode {consider,justify} for memo purpose selection

    • Proper argparse implementation with defaults

    • Display configuration on startup

  2. Link Enrichment Agent (COMPLETE)

    • Adds markdown hyperlinks to organizations mentioned throughout memo

    • Links investors, government bodies, partners, competitors, universities

    • Uses official websites (.gov, .edu, company domains)

    • Successfully tested: Added 13-19 organization links to DayOne memo

  3. Visualization Enrichment Agent (COMPLETE)

    • Attempts to find and embed charts/diagrams using Perplexity

    • Adds company socials to intro section as: **Social**: [LinkedIn](...) | [X/Twitter](...) | ...

    • Adds team LinkedIn links inline: **Name** ([LinkedIn](...)) (Role)

    • Successfully tested: Found 5 company profiles + 2 team profiles for DayOne

  5. Formatting Fixes (COMPLETE)

    • Date Correction: Memos now show actual current date (November 2025) instead of January 2025

    • Citation URLs: Added full URLs to citation reference list

    • Obsidian Spacing: Citations now have space before bracket for compatibility

  6. Deck Analyst Agent (COMPLETE)

    • Extracts structured data from PDF pitch decks using pypdf

    • Analyzes deck content with Claude Sonnet 4.5 (temperature=0)

    • Creates initial section drafts for 7 key memo sections

    • Runs FIRST in workflow, before research agent

    • Research agent builds on deck findings (fills gaps, validates claims)

    • Writer agent augments deck drafts rather than creating from scratch

Configuration Updates

Command-Line Interface

New Arguments:

BASH
python -m src.main "CompanyName" --type {direct,fund} --mode {consider,justify}

Defaults:

  • --type direct - Direct investment (startup)

  • --mode consider - Prospective analysis

Examples:

BASH
# Direct investment, prospective
python -m src.main "DayOne" --type direct --mode consider

# Fund commitment, retrospective
python -m src.main "Kearny Jackson" --type fund --mode justify

Data File Format

JSON Schema (data/{company}.json):

JSON
{
  "name": "CompanyName",
  "description": "Brief description",

  "url": "https://company.com",
  "notes": "Additional context",
  "deck": "/absolute/path/to/deck.pdf"  // Optional
}

Deck Property:

  • Optional field - workflow skips deck analysis if missing

  • Must be absolute path to PDF file

  • Currently only PDF format supported (images skipped)

Model Configuration

All Agents Using Sonar Pro:

  • research_enhanced.py - Line 92: model="sonar-pro"

  • visualization_enrichment.py - Line 109: model="sonar-pro"

  • citation_enrichment.py - Line 144: model="sonar-pro"

Confirmed: All agents using paid Sonar Pro model

Key Learnings

What Worked Exceptionally Well

  1. Sequential Enrichment Pipeline

    • Each agent augments content without breaking previous work

    • Clear separation of concerns (socials → links → visualizations → citations)

    • Graceful degradation when agents can't find data

    • Maintains narrative quality throughout pipeline

  2. Deck-First Approach

    • Deck analysis provides foundation of proprietary data

    • Research agent fills gaps rather than duplicating

    • Writer agent preserves deck insights while adding context

    • Conditional routing maintains backward compatibility

  3. Socials Enrichment Quality

    • Tavily search reliably finds LinkedIn profiles

    • URL validation prevents broken links

    • Clean integration into intro and team sections

    • Handles both dict and string team member formats

  4. Link Enrichment Coverage

    • Successfully identified and linked 19 organizations

    • Covered investors, competitors, government bodies, partners

    • Used official domains (.gov, .edu, company sites)

    • First-mention-only approach prevents over-linking

  5. Formatting Fixes

    • Date correction ensures accurate memo dates

    • Citation URLs enable click-through to sources

    • Obsidian spacing fixes improve markdown compatibility

    • All fixes working correctly in production

  6. Deck Analysis Robustness

    • pypdf reliably extracts text from complex PDFs

    • Claude handles imperfect OCR results gracefully

    • Structured extraction produces consistent JSON

    • Section draft generation identifies relevant content

Challenges Overcome

  1. Performance Optimization

    • Challenge: Sequential enrichment agents slow down workflow

    • Solution: Added progress indicators and timeouts

    • Learning: ~2 minutes for deck analysis is acceptable for value added

    • Future: Could parallelize independent enrichment agents

  2. Visualization Limitations

    • Challenge: Perplexity doesn't reliably return image URLs in text search

    • Solution: Agent gracefully handles no results without breaking workflow

    • Learning: May need different approach (web scraping, custom API)

    • Future: Explore Claude vision capabilities for deck charts

  3. Date Inference Issue

    • Challenge: Claude was inferring "January 2025" instead of current date

    • Solution: Explicitly provide current date via datetime.now()

    • Learning: Don't rely on model inference for factual data

    • Fix: Added "IMPORTANT: Use {current_date}" to prompt

  4. Citation Spacing Requirements

    • Challenge: Obsidian requires space before citation bracket

    • Solution: Updated system prompt with explicit spacing rules

    • Learning: Small formatting details matter for tool compatibility

    • Fix: "text. [^1]" inline but "[^1]:" in references

  5. Socials Agent Team Data Handling

    • Challenge: Team members could be dicts or strings

    • Solution: Added isinstance() checks to handle both formats

    • Learning: Always handle multiple data formats gracefully

    • Fix: Works with both structured and unstructured team data

  6. Deck Path Resolution

    • Challenge: Need to validate deck path exists before processing

    • Solution: Check Path.exists() before attempting extraction

    • Learning: Always validate file paths early in workflow

    • Fix: Graceful error message if deck specified but not found

Breaking Changes

Workflow Entry Point

  • Previous: Always starts with research agent

  • Current: Conditional entry (deck_analyst if deck exists, else research)

  • Impact: No breaking changes - backward compatible

State Schema

  • Previous: No deck-related fields

  • Current: Added deck_path and deck_analysis fields

  • Impact: Requires create_initial_state() update - handled automatically

Enrichment Sequence

  • Previous: Research → Draft → Citations → Validate

  • Current: Research → Draft → Socials → Links → Visualizations → Citations → Validate

  • Impact: Longer runtime (~1-2 minutes added) but richer content
